How to weatherproof your doors and windows
Weatherproofing doors and windows with caulking and weatherstrips is a simple but effective way to prevent drafts and improve energy efficiency, especially as the winter months approach
Caulking Windows and Doors:
1. Choose the Right Caulk: For outdoor applications, use a high-quality exterior caulk, and for interiors, use a flexible, paintable caulk. Silicone or silicone-latex caulks are ideal due to their water resistance and longevity.
2. Prepare the Surface: Before applying caulk, thoroughly clean the surfaces around the windows and doors. Remove any old, cracked caulk or paint, and make sure the area is dry and dust-free. Using a utility knife or scraper, carefully remove any loose material.
3. Apply the Caulk: Cut the caulk tube nozzle at a 45-degree angle to improve control. Load it into a caulking gun and apply a steady, even bead of caulk to seams where the window frame meets the wall or where door frames have gaps. Smooth it out with a wet finger or a caulk-smoothing tool to ensure a good seal.
4. Allow Drying Time: Allow the caulk to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually within 24 hours, before painting it or exposing it to moisture.
Installing Weatherstrips:
1. Select the Right Weatherstrips: There are several types available, including adhesive-backed foam strips, V-strip, and rubber weatherstripping. Foam strips are commonly used on windows, whereas rubber or metal strips are better suited for doors.
2. Measure and Cut: Measure the height and width of your windows and doors. Cut the weatherstrips to size with scissors or a utility knife.
3. Installation: Peel off the adhesive backing from foam strips and press them firmly along the edges of windows or doors. When closing a door, ensure that the strip compresses slightly, forming a tight seal while allowing for movement.
