Draught-Proofing Your Home Ready For Winter

Posted on: 28 November 2024

An efficient and affordable method of increasing energy efficiency, lowering heating expenses, and making your home more comfortable is to draught-proof it

These easy measures will help you draught-proof your home, keeping it warmer and reducing your energy costs throughout the winter months. Draughts are frequently produced by gaps around doors, windows, flooring, and other areas where air can escape.

1. Seal Doors and Windows
• Doors: Put draught excluders on external doors' bottoms. Gaps can be effectively sealed with adhesive foam strips or brush strips. Fabric draught excluders are an affordable alternative for interior doors.
• Windows: To close gaps around window frames, use rubber strips or self-adhesive foam. For extra insulation in sash windows, think about using brush seals or secondary glazing film.

2. Block Unused Chimneys
If your fireplace is not being used, think about blocking the chilly air flow using an inflated chimney balloon or chimney draught excluder. If you choose to utilise the fireplace, just be sure to take it off.

3. Fill Gaps in Floors and Skirting Boards
• Fill in the spaces between floorboards or around the edges of skirting boards with flexible silicone sealant. This keeps heat in while blocking the entry of cold air.
• For further insulation, think about installing a rug or carpet in homes with open floorboards.

4. Seal Loft Hatches
Warm air can escape through loft hatches. You can apply draught-proofing strips around the edges or install an insulated cover.

5. Check for Other Draughty Spots
• Look for any gaps near electrical outlets, vents, and pipes. To seal these areas, use silicone sealant or expanding foam.
• Draughts can also come from letterboxes and keyholes. Install a keyhole cover or letterbox brush to stop heat loss.
